They are made from a base of the fresh fruit of your choice and plain Greek yogurt, a simple yet delicious combination that results in homemade popsicles that are sweet, fruity, rich, and creamy.
Ever since I started making my own popsicles at home, I’ve been completely hooked. The kids and I have so much fun mixing and matching different types of fruit, yogurts, and sweeteners to make the perfect homemade popsicles.
Sometimes, we even add toppings like chopped nuts, chocolate chips, or melted chocolate syrup, like in my Healthy Fudgesicles.
One of the things I love most about homemade popsicles is that they are so easy to make. You blend up your ingredients like a smoothie, then transfer the mixture to your popsicle molds, add popsicle sticks, and pop ‘em in the freezer.
Plus these healthy yogurt pops are such an easy way to get my kids to eat more fruit. Looking for more popsicle ideas, try these Lemon Lime Popsicles, Creamy Banana Popsicles, and Strawberry Popsicles.
Key Ingredients
To make these easy homemade popsicles, you will need the following key ingredients:
- Fresh fruit: You can use any kind of fruit you like, but I like to use a combination of blueberries and raspberries. This are also delicious with mango, pineapple, blackberries, cherries, bananas, peaches, or any other fresh or frozen fruit.
- Greek yogurt: This protein-packed ingredient gives our popsicles a thick, creamy texture and adds a ton of beneficial nutrients. Use flavored vanilla yogurt, coconut yogurt, or fruit flavored yogurt to change up the flavor.
- Maple syrup: This adds a touch of sweetness to enhance the sweetness of the fruit. If you don’t have maple syrup, feel free to swap it out for honey or agave.
- Water: While I use regular filtered water in this recipe, you can substitute it with flavored water, fruit juice, or the milk of your choice.
Recipe Variations
Looking for ways to change up this recipe? Here are some easy and fun ways to change it up:
- Use different fruits. While I often use mixed berries in these popsicles, I love switching it up and using different fruits depending on what I have at home. Try out a different combination like strawberry and banana or pineapple and mango.
- Switch out the liquid. Don’t want to use plain old water? No problem, you can use any kind of liquid you like. Flavored water, fruit juice, and almond milk all work well.
- Use a different yogurt. I like to use plain Greek yogurt in this recipe, but you can make your popsicles with any kind of yogurt you like. Flavored Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, coconut milk, and any dairy-free yogurt alternative will do.
- Make an adult version. Hosting a barbecue? Try making an adults-only version by adding a little vodka or rum to the popsicles for boozy frozen treats.
How to Store Homemade Popsicles
Storing these healthy frozen treats is a breeze, so feel free to make a big batch all at once. While the popsicles will need to be kept in the molds for at least 6 hours to fully freeze, they shouldn’t be stored in them long-term. They won’t spoil, but storing popsicles in their molds is a surefire way to get freezer burn.
Instead, you should transfer the fully-frozen popsicles to an airtight storage bag. When stored properly, the popsicles will maintain their color, texture, and flavor in the freezer for up to 1-2 months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about homemade fruit popsicles:
What can I use to make popsicles creamy?
I typically like to use Greek yogurt to make popsicles creamy, as it has a rich and silky texture that makes popsicles super creamy. However, you can also use plain yogurt, coconut milk, or your favorite dairy-free yogurt alternative.
What kind of fruit should I use for popsicles?
When it comes to homemade popsicles, there is a ton of room for creativity. You can use any kind of fruit you like, or a combination of an assortment of fruits. Some of my favorite fruits for popsicles are berries, mango, pineapples, and watermelon.
How long does it take to freeze popsicles?
It typically takes between 4 and 6 hours to freeze homemade popsicles. I recommend freezing them for no less than 6 hours and preferably overnight, if you have the time.
Are popsicles bad for you?
That totally depends on the popsicle. Because many store-bought popsicles are loaded up with artificial ingredients and high fructose corn syrup, they’re not the healthiest of snacks. By making popsicles from scratch, we can control the ingredients that go into them and use only wholesome, natural ingredients.
What should I use to sweeten popsicles?
Whether or not you use any added sweeteners in your homemade popsicles is entirely up to you. Fruit is sweet on its own, but natural sweeteners can be great for enhancing the sweetness if you like your treats on the sweeter side. Some of my favorite choices for natural sweeteners include maple syrup, raw honey, and agave.
