During the spring and summer months, asparagus is easily one of my favorite veggies to eat. It’s versatile and can be enjoyed in a ton of different ways, from cold salads to hot meals on the grill.

This grilled lemon asparagus recipe has got to be one of the best asparagus recipes I’ve tried and the best part is that it only takes 10 minutes to prepare.

All you need is fresh asparagus, olive oil, lemon juice, feta cheese, salt, and pepper. Simply season your veggies, cook them on the grill, then mix them with the lemon and feta just before serving the dish.

Just like that, you’ve got the perfect summer side dish. You could even swap out the asparagus if you have another green vegetable you want to cook up like grilled broccoli or grilled zucchini.

Serve this dish alongside juicy grilled chicken or fish for a light meal or add some grilled potatoes or whole-grain pasta salad to beef it up with some healthy carbs.

These delicious grilled lemon and feta asparagus are super fresh and flavorful, so it’s wonderful for the season. It’s also great for meal prep if you’re looking to plan your week out.

Grilled Lemon Asparagus Ingredients

Here are the key ingredients you’ll need to bring this grilled asparagus to life.

  • Asparagus: Look for bright green stalks that appear to be firm and free from bruising or damage. Using the freshest, ripest asparagus is the key to the best-tasting dish.
  • Olive Oil: Make sure to opt for a high-quality olive oil to toss your asparagus in before grilling it to perfection.
  • Lemon Juice: The citrus flavors and acidity go a long way in brightening up the asparagus for a fresh and vibrant side dish. Swap in your favorite vinegar for a different flavor combination.
  • Feta Cheese: I love the way the tangy flavor of feta cheese compliments the zesty lemon juice and smoky asparagus.

Recipe Tips and Tricks

Want to make the best grilled asparagus? Here are some of my top tips to help you achieve the tastiest results:

  • If you want an even tangier flavor and a nice pop of color, sprinkle some lemon zest onto the asparagus just before serving it.
  • Don’t have any asparagus? If you want to try something else, switch out the vegetable for another one. Some great options include broccoli, green beans, and zucchini.
  • For a delicious nutty flavor and variation in texture, add some chopped pistachios, pine nuts, or almonds to the dish.
  • You can make a lemon feta vinaigrette to pour over the asparagus by mixing together olive oil, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, and feta cheese until combined. Save the vinaigrette and pour it over the asparagus just before serving it.
  • Feel free to make this grilled asparagus dairy-free by leaving out the feta cheese. Alternatively, you could swap the feta for another type of cheese like goat cheese or parmesan.

How to Store the Dish

I think that this dish is best served right away, but you can also store it for later if you have leftovers or want to make extras for meal prepping. To store cooked asparagus, allow it to cool completely before placing it in an airtight container or tightly wrapping it in aluminum foil. Once properly sealed, you can store asparagus as follows:

  • In the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
  • In the freezer for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about this grilled lemon asparagus recipe:

After asparagus has been stored past its prime, it tends to become woody—especially at the ends. I recommend looking for the ripest asparagus you can find at the grocery store and using it within a few days. Also, make sure to cut the ends of your asparagus spears to get rid of the end bits that could potentially come out woody.

When asparagus is overcooked, it tends to become limp and soggy. You can easily avoid this issue by following this recipe as instructed and keeping a close eye on your asparagus while it cooks. Asparagus doesn’t take long to cook, so as long as you keep this in mind and watch over it, you should be fine.

If you don’t have a grill or don’t feel like firing it up, then you can cook your asparagus in a 425°F oven for 8-10 minutes. Don’t worry, it’ll still come out delicious! Just make sure to spread the asparagus evenly on the pan so none of the spears are touching.
