There are certain foods that I don’t miss when I am eating healthy. Unfortunately, french fries are not one of them. Usually, when the craving strikes, I reach for these butternut squash fries or some baked sweet potatoes fries.
However, when I am trying to lower my carb intake or pairing my "fries" with something more caloric, these celeriac fries are a great alternative! Made from celery root, these crispy fries are low in carbs and calories and pack a flavor punch.
What more can you ask for?
Now, the flavor isn’t quite like celery, in case you're wondering. It’s a bit more earthy. Season them with salt, pepper, and/or your favorite spices and you have a winner!
My friends ate a whole bowl full before even pausing to ask what they were. A pretty good indicator that they taste great in my world!
Key Ingredients For Celeriac Fries
The ingredients in this recipe could not be any simpler. All you need is some sliced celery root, oil, and your favorite spices. Here's a bit more information about what I used and any substitutions you can make.
- Celeriac: Make sure you cut it into really thin fries. All the fries should be about the same width so that they bake evenly.
- Olive Oil: You need some sort of oil to drizzle on top of the celeriac. This will help the spices stick to it and give it a crispy texture. If not olive oil, then I would use avocado oil if possible.
- Spices: Use your favorite spices on top of the fries! You can go as basic as just salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Or, add some heat with paprika and cayenne pepper. My go-to is this homemade seasoning salt I make.

What To Serve With Celery Root Fries
What are your favorite ways to eat fries? These are the perfect replacement for French fries, so just serve them with your favorite healthy grilled recipes. They taste amazing with garlic-grilled shrimp. In fact, you can use the same seasoning for both recipes!
Or, add these fries on the side with chicken and zucchini burgers. They are light and healthy and packed with fiber. For more of a snack, munch on celeriac fries dipped into some sugar-free ketchup or some homemade creamy chipotle sauce!
Recipe Tips And Ideas For Crispy Celeriac Fries
Follow these tips to make sure that these low-carb fries turn out crispy and delicious every single time!
- Place the baking dish in the oven while it preheats. When you place the celeriac fries on a preheated dish, they will crisp up better.
- Don't just drizzle the olive oil on the celeriac. Add the sliced celeriac to a bowl or bag with the olive oil and spices and toss them, so they are completely coated.
- Keep the celeriac in a single layer on the baking sheet. This gives the air room to spread evenly around and helps them to all get crispy at the same time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions I frequently get asked about by some readers...
How do you store celeriac fries?
The best way to store leftover celeriac fries is in an airtight container or resealable food storage bag and keep it in the refrigerator. Their texture will start to deteriorate after about four days, so it's best to eat them within three if you can.
What are some healthy dips for these low-carb fries?
Either purchase sugar-free condiments from the store or make your own healthy condiments at home. The fries will taste delicious with some roasted red pepper dip. Of course, healthy honey mustard is a crowd-pleaser and always a winning choice. Or, for a little spice, dip the fries into some jalapeno ranch dressing.
Can I cut the celeriac into wedges?
Yes, you can cut the celeriac fries into wedges! The only thing you'll have to watch out for is that they will take longer to bake in the oven. Keep an eye on them and flip them over halfway through the baking time.
How do you make them in the air fryer?
You can easily make these fries in the air fryer as well. After you toss them in the olive oil and spices, put them in the air fryer basket. Bake them at 400F for about 25 minutes. Shake the basket halfway through the cooking time so that they all crisp up evenly.
Why are my fries not crispy enough?
A tip that will help your fries to crisp up better is to take a paper towel and wipe down the slices before you add the olive oil. This will remove any excess moisture that might be remaining on the vegetable!
